When the OH and I welcomed our daughters into the world, we were delighted and bursting with gratitude for these two perfect little 'gifts'.
As is customary, it wasn't long before people began to ask if we were going to try for a boy. Well-meaning onlookers assumed that we weren't satisfied with our two little girls and would be longing for a boy to complete our brood. I have to admit to not feeling quite 'finished' after having two children. Life seemed too easy as a family of four and being someone who relishes a challenge, I went on a mission to persuade the OH that he wasn't 'finished' yet either!
But did we want a boy? The absolute honest answer to that question is "yes". Deep down, both of us would have liked a boy but we knew that this was a selfish desire and definitely not something we should set our hearts on - the odds were stacked against us after all! We therefore made a pact: until we were ready to welcome a third girl into our family, we shouldn't even try for another baby. So wait we did, for 2 years and then we both agreed that the time was right - boy or girl, our family needed a fifth member.
"You've got a full-house!"
....cried the midwife as she lifted our little bundle out (just to clarify the rather odd terminology, I had a c-section!). Later on that day, we both owned up to being utterly confused by her expression - did she mean a hat trick of girls or a 3:2 combination! I am pleased to say that the latter was correct and in September 2004, we welcomed The Boy into our tribe - the OH's playmate and constant companion. What a blessing he has been to our (not so) little family!
Still being outnumbered 3:2 we needed to even things up a bit, so in 2010 we introduced 'It' to the party. Now the boys are in their element!
Pin It Now!

Ahhhh that made me chuckle....I bet you thought, huh? Bingo? :)
ReplyDeleteDidn't know what she was talking about! Is it a boy, is it a girl?!
DeleteThis is a lovely post, its a great picture of your boys :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks Jaime :)
DeleteThat is a funny expression. I was the other way round, three boys first, so every one assumed that I wanted a girl. When I got pregnant the fourth time, I genuinely didn't think I 'did' girls but it was a nice surprise.
ReplyDeleteI was a little concerned that I wouldn't know how to 'do' boys either but I think it comes naturally. So pleased that we have a mix but I would honestly have been happy either way.
DeleteI love the photo of your boys :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks Vicki x
DeleteFabulous action shot - absolutely LOVE it x
ReplyDeleteAh thank you :) x
DeleteGreat post! Not sure I'd be thinking about bingo whilst giving birth though. That's a lovely photo too.
ReplyDeleteThanks Laura....I can assure you that bingo was the last thing on my mind lol!
DeleteOh, those sorts of comments made me SO cross. With three girls, I actually wanted another, and was a bit taken aback to have a boy. Of course I wouldn't change him for the world now, but there are still moments, when people say "oh, a boy at last, you must be pleased", that I wish he was a girl just so I could say "no, actually, I wanted a baby - who would have been, and is, perfect either way"!
ReplyDeleteSorry, rant over.
Great pic too!
Agreed! And you're perfectly entitled to rant ;) It's noone else's business actually but we wouldn't be so rude as to say that!
DeleteSo, presumably, 'it' is a little boy too! Love the photo.
ReplyDeleteHe certainly is!
DeleteThat is such a funny phrase! I was ready to have a third boy when I had my girl, but I think it's great to have a bit of balance in your family. What a lovely photo :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Sarah - I think the balance mixes things up a bit....I'm sure he will love all his sister's friends coming round as he grows up ;)
DeleteThat was lovely .... very impressed you can juggle three, and I really liked that you waited until you were ready for either a boy or girl - a baby regardless, and then you got a boy!
ReplyDeleteDo you think the midwife has a full range of poker terms ready for each delivery - a pair, three of a kind? Very funny!
ReplyDeletegreat post, lovely photo xx
ReplyDeleteyou should keep going until you get to a football team! ha ha only kidding. lovey story and great photo x
ReplyDeleteNo chance, I'm all finished now!
DeleteHow lovely to see 'It' on the blog! I am a huge fan of his! I love the idea that you had a bingo obsessed Midwife!
