Random acts of kindness and other such niceties #R2BC

Last Thursday I had a right old rant on the blog, a moany post about things that had been getting right up my nose of late!  It wasn't my usual style, I even apologized before starting the 'rant' (if you missed it, here it is!).  So this week I have my positive hat back on and I'm linking up with Mich at Mummy from the Heart's R2BC linky. Here are this week's Reasons to be Cheerful:

1. A few weeks ago, I received an email from The Boy's school "suggesting" that we might like to send our darling children to school on 3rd December, dressed in 'traditional Tudor costume'.  For some of you, this probably sounds like a challenge; you crafty mums out there might even rush to the nearest charity shop, thread up your sewing machine and create a wonderful masterpiece out of someone's old cast-offs. Not me I'm afraid.  These things fill me with dread and a foreboding sense of inadequacy.  So instead of letting my imagination run wild, I set about writing a moany witty facebook status, something along the lines of 'what will they think of next?!' I put all thoughts of Tudor costumes firmly to the back of my mind, safe in the knowledge that a week before the event, I could always run to ebay for help.

A few days later, a little message pinged into my inbox. An old friend (probably more of an acquaintance actually), who I haven't seen for about 3 years and who in fact I had only ever rubbed shoulders with at toddler group, asked if I was still looking for a Tudor costume.  It turns out that she had a friend, who would be willing to lend it to me!  In other words, a friend of a 'friend', was willing to come to the rescue of little old me!  She didn't need to do that.  In fact she went to a lot of trouble to get the costume to me, via a mutual acquaintance of ours.  Amazing!  This kind of thing restores my faith in humankind :)  A random act of kindness and one for which my son was truly thankful.  And look, I made those silver buckles on his shoes...impressed?! (he's clearly not sure!)

2. One of my top 5 rants last week, was my barking dog.  Joking aside, the unpleasant noise being emitted from my yappy little pooch every time he was turfed out into the garden, was really beginning to get to me.  I was finding the noise incredibly stressful and I'm sure that the neighbours did not appreciate the OH shouting from the bedroom window at 7.30am for the dog to 'shut up'!  We had tried everything, or so we thought......last weekend I finally forked out £50 for a bark colour - the best £50 we ever spent!  He has attempted a little yelp every now and again, but on sensing the noise, the collar squirts out an unpleasant citronella spray, which dogs apparently hate.  Peace on earth and goodwill to all men! There is now a vague possibility of receiving a christmas card from the neighbours.....being invited round for festive drinks is probably pushing it!

3.  And last but by no means least, I am pleased to announce that the magazine I have been Copy Editor for, has finally been completed!   I stepped into this role only about 6 months ago and I love it!  Our church publishes a magazine 3 times per year, various people contribute to the copy and I am so proud of what we manage to produce each time. 2000 copies will be handed out in and around Bracknell over the next few months. Here is a shot of last term's edition:

In every day there is always something to be thankful for and in every week there is a whole host of things, if we look hard enough.  What are your Reasons to be Cheerful this week?

  1. Wow, that costume is amazing! I know exactly what you mean. Dressing up always fills me with dread too.
I'm so glad the bark collar worked. Our dog can be a pain too. I think they are worse than the kids half the time!
Your magazine is also a great achievement, well done you!!
    Thanks for linking up xx

  2. Great idea for a post. My reasons to be thankful are:
The plug in our bathroom sink has been broken for over a year and yesterday it was fixed. I now have a lovely new working plug and wasn't charged for any of it-thank you Rupert.
My daughter seems a little happier this morning and had a good sleep for the first time in over 3 weeks.

    1. All things to be hugely thankful for - it's often the little things like the plug being mended isn't it? Makes all the difference!

  5. What an amazing person! And he looks great! I'm 'fortunate' that my dog was deaf from birth. Apart from 1 day, when he was left and went a bit nuts, he doesn't bark! Good job finding something get it sorted x
