In Remission

These two little words - 'In Remission' - were welcomed with open arms last week.  I cannot imagine the myriad of emotions that my gorgeous friend and her family must have felt on hearing this news, but for me it was a mixture of relief, joy and thankfulness.

Four years ago, I received a telephone call, to inform me that our precious friend had been diagnosed with breast cancer.  Having lost her Mum to cancer when we were all just 19 years of age, this seemed such a cruel twist of fate but one which I guess had been hanging over the heads of her and her sisters, all this time.

This news followed many months of appointments, radiotherapy treatment, chemotherapy and more recently, an operation to remove her ovaries.   She lost her hair, became incredibly weak and at times, wondered how she could go on. The treatment was unbearable and the uphill struggle seemed impossible.

But struggle she did and this year, we celebrated her 40th birthday - a big bash with close friends and family (over 100 of them, she's a popular lady!)  In May, I blogged about a special trip to Italy that I went on with 3 close friends....she was one of them and again, we celebrated in style! Later in the year, she completed a sponsored sky dive in aid of Cancer Research, raising the incredible sum of £875!

The instructor looks more scared than her!

In am in awe of this lady, so much so that I could write 10 blog posts about her! Suffice to say, she is incredibly special to me, not just because of what she has conquered but because she makes this world a better place and I love her.  She is the only 'lady' I know who can fart in public and get away with it just by following it with a little giggle! She shares the same sense of humour as me and her ability to keep me in stitches all the way back from our flight home from Verona, was just brilliant!  Her husband and 3 gorgeous boys are an absolute credit to her and I am so thankful that the five of them will be able to celebrate Christmas this year, relaxing in the knowledge that she is IN REMISSION!!!

Happy 40th dear friend!!

  1. That is a lovely post and such good news - a definite reason to be cheerful. A colleague lost her sister to cancer, at the age of 32, a couple of weeks ago, only a year after diagnosis. I only met her twice, but she seemed lovely and great fun. The sisters were so close. It's hard for us at work to even talk about and we can't begin to imagine what the family must be going through. It's great to hear that it doesn't beat everyone. x

    1. Such a horrible disease :( Having written this post, I am all too aware that some readers may well have lost close family and friends to cancer. My friend is one of the lucky ones. Sadly, there are so many more who aren't.

  12. BUT, and this is a very big 'BUT', without the love and constant support of her very dear friend, this 'lady' (ha ha ha) would not have found the path to recovery quite so achievable. The fact that she was surrounded by amazing family and friends, and talented doctors tooo, is all part of the journey. I feel truly blessed, but not blessed enough to ever do another skydive!!! xxx
